When improvising in jazz you need mystery, but also mastery: the former unleashes the power of instinctive inspirations that leads to uncontrolled, unexpected and immediate results; the latter reminds us that only controlled knowledge and skills - the result of a musician’s effort, commitment and experience - can transform a rough stone into a multi-faceted diamond. The mystery/mastery dichotomy is the essence of “Minimal Works”, an impromptu album by FCTRIO (Francesco Cusa Trio; Francesco Cusa, Riccardo Grosso and Tonino Miano).
Featuring eight tracks, the album opens with the intense poignancy of “Sweet Lucrezio”, that, through repetition and variation, conjures up in the listeners’ minds visions of a cat that, light and subtle, jumps on and off roofs with feline insouciance and aloof grace. Sleigh bells turn into a hypnotically hallucinating motif in “The Only White Smarties”, while “Luminal” uses the grammar of rhythms and chords to generate a multi-nuanced jazz improvisation and “A Little Mouse” is a sparkling gem in which piano and bass create a jagged soundscape through syncopation.
The album also includes four meditations: all of them are characterized by a common musical thread – Tibetan bells. Yet this central theme and governing principle becomes increasingly less virtuosic and more mysterious, creating chromatic progressions of unusual and strange, non-functional harmonies, verging more towards the eerily alien than the comfortingly and soothingly meditative. Characterised by a sense of impending doom, these dissonant compositions are the perfect soundtracks for our complex and tumultuous times.
Expression of an almost mystical creative intuition, "Minimal Works" celebrates the art of improvisation and accompanies the listener on a journey through new states of consciousness until the achievement of a strong emotional empathy.

Quando si improvvisa nel jazz si ha bisogno di mistero, ma anche di maestria: il mistero sprigiona il potere di ispirazioni improvvise che portano a risultati incontrollati, inaspettati e immediati; la maestria ci ricorda che solo le conoscenze e le abilità ben misurate - risultato dello sforzo, dell'impegno e dell'esperienza di un musicista - trasformano una pietra grezza in un perfetto diamante dalle molteplici sfaccettature. La dicotomia mistero/maestria è l'essenza di "Minimal Works", una release del FCTRIO (Francesco Cusa Trio; Francesco Cusa, Riccardo Grosso and Tonino Miano).
L’album include otto tracce e si apre con l'intenso pathos di "Sweet Lucrezio", che, attraverso la ripetizione e la variazione, evoca nella mente degli ascoltatori visioni di un gatto dal passo leggero e discreto che salta con spensieratezza felina e distaccata grazia sui tetti. Suoni simili a campanelli di una slitta si trasformano in un motivo ipnoticamente allucinante in "The Only White Smarties", mentre "Luminal" utilizza un vasto glossario di ritmi e accordi per creare un'improvvisazione jazz multi-sfumata e "A Little Mouse" è una piccola gemma in cui pianoforte e contrabbasso creano un paesaggio sonoro attraverso la sincope.
L'album comprende anche quattro meditazioni: tutte sono caratterizzate da un fil rouge - le campane tibetane. Questo tema centrale e principio guida diventa sempre meno virtuosistico e più misterioso con il progredire delle meditazioni, creando progressioni cromatiche di armonie insolite, inusuali e non funzionali, che sfociano in suoni inquietantemente alieni piuttosto che in confortanti e rassicuranti tonalità meditative. Evocando un senso di destino imminente, queste composizioni dissonanti sono le colonne sonore perfette per i nostri tempi complessi e tumultuosi.
Espressione di un'intuizione creativa quasi mistica, "Minimal Works" celebra l’arte dell’improvvisazione e accompagna l'ascoltatore in un viaggio attraverso nuovi stati di coscienza fino al raggiungimento di una forte empatia emotiva.
